Maintenance

The combination of all technical and correspondingadministrative actions intended to retain an item in, orrestore it to, a state in which it can perform its requiredfunction (stated condition).

 


Make or Buy

The process of making a choice between producing aproduct oneself or buying it.

 


Make-To-Order (Manufacture-to-Order)

A manufacturing process strategy where the trigger to begin manufacture of a product is an actual customer order or release, rather than a market forecast. Other manufacturing process strategies are Configure/Package-to-Order, Engineer-to-Order, and Make-to-Stock.

 


Make-To-Stock (Manufacture-To-Stock)

A manufacturing process strategy where finished product is continually held in warehouse inventory to fulfil expected incoming orders or releases based on a forecast.

 

 

Mass customization

The flexibility to meet the demands of a customer base whose needs are diverse and/or changing.
 

 

Materials handling

The physical handling of products and materials between procurement and shipping.
 

 

Materials management

Inbound logistics from suppliers through the production process. The movement and management of materials and products from procurement through production.
 

 

Materials Requirements Planning (MRP)

A system to support manufacturing and fabrication organizations by the timely release of production and purchase orders using the production plan for finished goods to determine the materials required to make the product.
 

 

Milestone

A term relating to network planning systems. It is thebeginning/end of every activity of the series of successive activities ranked in the relationships diagram.
 

 

Mode of transport

Method of transport used for the carriage of goodsand/or persons.E.g.: by air or by road.
 

 

Muda, Mura, Muri

Three Japanese terms often used together in the Toyota Production System (and called the Three Ms) that collectively describe wasteful practices to be eliminated.

 
Muda: Any activity that consumes resources without creating value for the customer.
Mura: Unevenness in an operation; for example, an uneven work pace in an operation causing operators to hurry and then wait.
Muri: Overburdening equipment or operators.
 

 

MRP-II - Manufacturing Resource Planning

Direct outgrowth and extension of closed-loop MRP. Was developed as a method to calculate the utilization of resources (machines, material, people) in a manufacturing company. The concept covers the step-by-step planning starting at the highest level in the planning hierarchy. Most ERP Systems based on the principle.
